Model makeover brings Fo to tears, America’s Next Top Model 12 Episode 3 ANTM
March 15, 2009 by vongsundara
America’s Next Top Model’s annual makeover episode came a lot earlier in the cycle than usual. I’m personally happy that the makeovers happened during the second episode, as the competition doesn’t really seem to start until the makeovers are complete.
This year’s makeover episode had quite a bit of drama, especially from Fo, which is unfortunate because Fo had the best makeover. Fo’s baby reaction definitely made me like her less. Hopefully she can get over it and move on, because if she has another week like this week, then I’m going to be hoping and wishing for her to go.
Allison, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
Let’s be honest here; Allison looks creepy. Her gigantic, bulgy eyes are super duper scary. It’s not just her eyes but the way she stares through them. Her thin, ordinary hair worked to bring more focus to her eyes. Allison’s gigantic blonde weave does a good job of balancing her overall look and taking attention away from her eyes. Don’t get me wrong, I love Allison’s look, but she has to stop purposely bugging her eyes out all the time.
Allison’s face is well lit, and her facial expression is absolutely perfect for the photo. Unfortunately, Allison’s clothes are barely lit at all and her body position is forgettable.
Review Score: ★★★★☆
London, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
London has always reminded me of Silver from the rebooted 90210. She always had a hippie feel to her with her random headbands. I agree with the judges in cutting her hair short, but I’m not completely sold on the short cut they went with. I didn’t really see London as a blonde, and especially not a blonde with jagged shreds surrounding her face. This is the type of look that might take a week or two to grow on me.
I’m still not a total believer in London’s makeover, but I must admit that her hair looks fantastic in this photo. Everything about this photo is right.
Review Score: ★★★★☆
Fo, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
The short cut turns Fo from pretty girl to real model. I love this look on Fo. That’s saying a lot too, because I loved Fo when I first saw her. Now Fo looks ridiculously amazing. It’s too bad that she’s a little bit short; otherwise she’d be a real candidate as a credible model in today’s industry.
Fo pulled off a great photo despite her meltdown during the photoshoot. Her new makeover comes through well in the photo, and Fo’s face and clothing are both well lit. Her pose is a little stiff, but still comes off not bad at all.
Review Score: ★★★☆☆
Celia, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
I completely didn’t understand Celia’s look when she was chosen for ANTM Cycle 12. Sure, she had great cheekbones and height, but I was hoping that Tyra Banks would be looking for more in her models. This futuristic makeover combined with Celia’s photoshoot performances have changed my mind. Celia’s short, slicked-back hair really brings out her features well and makes her look less ordinary.
Celia lit herself well, but I don’t like her pose at all. It looks like Celia’s about to enter a martial arts pose-off competition.
Review Score: ★★★☆☆
Natalie, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
Natalie didn’t receive a makeover. I’m a little disappointed with the judges. I don’t agree that Natalie’s look was model perfect. Oh well, she does look like a model still, so I guess I can’t deduct too may points.
I love Natalie’s lit face and top arm position. The second light stick is somewhat wasted, though, and Natalie’s right leg is a little too bent. Overall, this is still one of the better photos of the day.
Review Score: ★★★☆☆
Jessica, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
Jessica’s face is too wide and her nose too big to be a credible model. Worse still, Jessica seems to think she’s the prettiest girl in the entire house. The makeover doesn’t do Jessica any favours, as it makes her face look even wider than it already was.
Jessica looks really scary in this photo. She scowls a little bit too much, and the effect is amplified by the below-face lighting. I kind of like this photo, as it strips away Jessica’s regular cute look.
Review Score: ★★½☆☆
Kortnie, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
I really don’t understand why Kortnie is on the show. She’s a little too pretty to be model with too much weight to fit in the model world and not enough weight to be a plus-size model. Someone seriously has to get Kortnie to stop tanning. It makes her look extra hoochie. The makeover itself is nice, but there’s no helping Kortnie look like a real model.
Poor Kortnie, she just does not belong on this show. Her breasts stick out in this photo in an unintended manner, and it looks like Kortnie’s about to break into the robot dance. This is the stiffest photo of the entire bunch.
Review Score: ★★☆☆☆
Nijah, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
Nijah’s makeover was nothing drastic, but it worked really well to freshen her look. Nijah’s hair was a little flat, and Tyra’s team simply added some Naomi Campbell-type volume. NIjah was always gorgeous, but now she’s super gorgeous.
I don’t understand Nijah’s pose at all. It looks very uncomfortable and doesn’t sell the clothes at all.
Review Score: ★½☆☆☆
Aminat, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
I loved Aminat’s afro, but I think the judges were right to give her a more versatile look. There’s only so much that can be done with an afro during photoshoots before it gets boring. I’m not totally sold on Aminat’s new wavy hair, but I guess they couldn’t give the Naomi Campbell hair to multiple contestants.
Aminat’s photo is an absolute mess, and it’s not all her fault. The photographer placed Aminat further into the background than the other featured models in their photoshoots. Aminat doesn’t help the situation by turning her face away from the light.
Review Score: ★☆☆☆☆
Sandra, makeover before and after plus self-lit photoshoot
Poor poor Sandra. This short, blonde cut is an absolute disaster. It’s even worse than the short, blonde cut Tyra gave to Jade a few cycles back. Is this seriously a hairstyle that real models have? I’ve never seen it.
Sandra’s lighting makes it look like her skin is made of a reflective mirror, as she concentrates both light sticks together, causing the light to sharply bounce off her face. Sandra’s facial expression has no conviction or direction.
Review Score: ★☆☆☆☆
Miss J was extra funny this episode, especially when she tried on Aminat’s afro. Sadly for Miss J, she looked better in the afro.
Review Score: ★★★★★
# Fo doesn’t have as much self-confidence as I thought.
# Aminat is confronting Sandra. Haha, this is hilarious: “The better person went home today.”
# I’m surprised Sandra didn’t have a bigger reaction.
# Jessica thinks she’s way hotter than she actually is. Her face is kind of boring to me and a little too wide.
# What a weird Tyra Mail today. I don’t get it at all.
# Haha, a purple plaid limo. It’s definitely eye-catching.
# Wow, bad over-the-top acting by Tyra and Mr. Jay and Miss J plus iPhone product placement.
# Hellz yeah, MAKEOVER DAY comes early this year.
# Wow, Tyra got John Barrett to come on his show.
# @Celia Two months? Try two years.
# I just don’t get Jessica’s look at all. After the makeover, she still looks too hoochie.
# Wow, Sandra is being totally sabotaged. Short, blonde hair? This is like Jade all over again.
# Allison does indeed look like a mermaid. I can’t wait to see how it looks in a new photo.
# Nijah looks hot in her after photo.
# Yeah, Fo gets a short cut. It will totally help her out.
# Celia’s crying a little bit but gets over it quickly. Her new look is very model butch.
# Goodbye afro for Aminat. I love Aminat’s voice: “Questionable Miss J, questionable . . .” Haha.
# I’m not sure I buy Aminat’s new look.
# Kortnie is way too tanned. She looks better in red hair, but she does not belong in this competition.
# I don’t like London’s new hair. It’s very bizarre.
# Natalie gets saved. No makeover, how lame. Haha, Fo is so bitter.
# I don’t know why Teyona’s hair is swept back. It accentuates her wind-blown face, which is the last thing she needed. She reminds me of a less-pretty Furonda.
# Tahlia got a big, blonde weave. It’s not a bad lookat all.
# Oh great, Fo is starting to cry again. She’s getting on my nerves. Has she never watched this show yet?
# I agree with Sandra; models should be able to get their hair cut without crying.
# Oh great, more crying . . . Fo: “I have to hide my hair to feel pretty. This is what’s going to break me in this competition.” I haven’t heard this much complaining since the first two seasons.
# Jessica: “There’s not much you can do to make me look ugly.” Haha. Girlfriend needs to check the mirror. She does not have a model’s face.
# What, there are no Wal-Mart stores in New York City? That’s strange.
# Sutan is actually pretty cute when he tries to be.
# Kortnie’s tan is so overdone. Where is she from?
# Allison’s new look is growing on me.
# Aminat is doing a good job of selling the Cover Girl product.
# London is hardcore about the makeup tips.
# Aminat, Celia and Sandra win the challenge. I’m going to check walmart.com to see their photoshoot.
# Hmm, I can’t find the photos, oh well.
# Sandra is such a bitch, haha. Aminat is awesome: “Keep it cute, or put it on mute.” I must be out of touch with ghetto sayings. This is what happens when I live away from the ghetto for too long; I hate being out of touch.
# Wow, self-directed lighting.
# Here comes Nigel Barker; he is sooooooooo fine.
# Why is Nijah lying on the floor in such a boring pose?
# Jessica looks scary with that makeup on.
# Why is Aminat standing in the background? Every other model got to stand in the foreground.
# Sandra looks so horrible with her makeover. Her face looks way too shiny with that makeup on.
# Ooh, I like how Teyona is working that board.
# Damn Fo, please shut up.
# Fo’s leg is way too much in the foreground.
# Fo, short hair is not that difficult a concept to understand. Plain Jane’s brother? Seriously? Oh great, now she’s crying.
# Fo had the best makeover,a nd she doesn’t even get it.
# Natalie’s looking good, but I think she’s being a bit overhyped at the moment. There’s no chance she can win unless she starts to show more personality.
# Fo: “They took my hair away and now I’m gone.” What a spoiled brat. I really liked her too. Girlfriend needs to wake up before Tyra slaps her.
# Ooh, Fo does look stunning. Damn, Miss J’s hair is terrible this year.
# Good Tyra, give it to her. Let’s hope Fo shuts up now.
# Kortnie is just not pretty enough. Only half of her face is lit.
# Nijah’s outfit at panel is horrible.
# Nijah’s eyes look really dead in her photo.
# London’s pose in her final photo is great.
# Allison’s photo is amazing. Her blonde hair worked well.
# Sandra’s outfit is way too white. She concentrated the light too close to her face.
# I don’t like Celia’s photo as much as the judges. I like the face but now the robotic pose.
# Jessica’s photo is totally scary.
# Tahlia’s pose is totally boring. I love when Tyra shows the girls how to pose.
# Natalie’s photo looks good, but her boobs seem a little big.
# Sounds like Teyona’s hair is going to get changed again. Teyona’s photo is really good too.
# Aminat’s face looks horrible in that photo. I still think it’s unfair that she got placed in the background.
# Here comes the elimination panel. It’s going to be Sandra or Jessica.
# Teyona gets called first. It was a nice photo for sure.
# London should have been called earlier than she was.
# Sandra’s safe; I’m not sure why. So’s super-tanned Kortnie.
# Good, Aminat’s safe. She’s fun to watch.
# It’s down to Fo and Jessica. I really hope Fo stays. Sure she annoyed me to death today, but she’s still hot hot hot.
# Goodbye Jessica.
