A bit of a long opening, some wasted time. Tapping a microphone, asking the crowd how they’re doing, saying “um” and “let’s see a little about me” are definite comedy faux pas, and that’s just off the top. I don’t doubt that Jonathan Thymius will be fantastic, but it’s not tough to tell that he doesn’t have the experience as some of the others (or at least that’s the impression I get, I’m sure I’ll hear about it in the comments section if I’m wrong). Burping as a punchline and a long juggling setup also aren’t the greatest examples of comedy.
I love his character, but maybe I’m just too stuck on traditional comedy.
Jonathan Thymius knows his character well, and he does not break character ever. This gives him the advantage of standing apart from the rest of the comedians, which is important in a vote-in show. His jeans and red button-up shirt worked well considering his character but would otherwise be tragically awful in the real world..

I could have done without the devil joke to open. Again, I think the different comedians are rounding into shape as far as what we can expect. Jonathan Thymius has a great, memorable character but is a little lacking with the material, using somewhat generic joke conventions. The final impression of his friend Marty has been done quite often and done a lot better, nevermind the long windup with little payoff.
Same attire as last time but in a very yucky green shade this week. He’s consistent, though I don’t much like the extra shiny feel to his clothes this week.

The Comedy-O-Gram intro was super cute with the portable brick wall. It’s always great to see how other comedians find ways to make money in this crazy business.
Jonathan Thymius’ blue and white outfit today was totally reminiscent of a bowling uniform. As he pointed out himself, he totally looks like he should be the mayor of Cleveland. Whether I like the look or not, at least he has thought about it and made his choices informed.
Jonathan’s style is all his own including his choices on stage. Just like his fashion sense, it’s not for everyone but at least he’s thought about it. I’m starting to get a better sense of what he’s trying to accomplish on stage. His word play and material is starting to grow on me.

Tommy Johnagin is an interesting fellow. I’m not sure I’m quite his target audience, because there were some things that flew over my head. I don’t know what it is, but his stage presence gives me the cold shoulder. Now that very well may be on purpose, and he’s obviously a very successful comedian, but it certainly doesn’t make me want to pick up the phone and vote for him with topics around ugly strippers and his grandma dying. When I look past the character and delivery, some of the material is actually really well written. It’s too bad that it’s tough to see through the condescending-style delivery (though again, that may be an artistic choice).
Tommy Johnagin was probably the most casual of the performers in jeans an untucked button-up shirt. Not sure it was the right choice for national television, but it’s up to him to craft his character, so who am I to say.

This is going to sound just like last week, but there’s this condescending tone in Tommy Johnagin’s voice that makes me not connect with his material. It’s unfortunate because even though he’s talking about something sympathetic like being cheated upon or getting his heart broken, he still comes off as unsympathetic.
Thank goodness the stylists got to Tommy. Much better this week in different shades of blue with a tie and great pants.

Hmm, can’t say I’m surprised to find out that Tommy Johnagin wears wife beaters and likes to shuck corn.
Oh Tommy Tommy Tommy. I just don’t get it. Once again Tommy starts out with some condescending and anti-female leaning jokes. This dude must have had some really bad experiences with women. Ending on a penis joke was a little strange for a television performance too.
Tommy’s look is very corporate and polished, which might not be the best choice for a comedian. That said, the colours were well matched and the tie was cute.
Commenting on Conan O’Brien’s treatment by NBC and Jay Leno over The Tonight Show

I love Conan O’Brien. There’s something about his style of comedy that has always appealed to me. He’s just so strange, so awkward, so ugly, and yet it all comes together in an amazing package. This is why the current situation with Conan O’Brien and NBC is so disheartening to me. This is the biggest network television screw-up since ABC drove Who Wants to be a Millionaire into the ground by over-saturating the airwaves.
First they announce that he’s going to be the new host of The Tonight Show five years in advance as a way to dangle a carrot in front of him so that he won’t leave NBC for greener pastures. Now that he’s done his time and waited the five years, they have completely messed up his transition to official host of The Tonight Show.
I began to grow concerned when I heard that Jay Leno was going to have a show in prime time that preceded The Tonight Show (and local news). Come on, NBC, if you’re that hardcore about Jay Leno then why did you let him off of The Tonight Show to begin with. This move completely undermined Conan’s rise to hosting duties of The Tonight Show, as it showed clearly whom NBC felt was their premiere late-night host.
Now NBC is saying that Conan’s ratings weren’t up to snuff? Well how could they be when NBC spent all their money promoting The Jay Leno Show while undermining The Tonight Show. Goodness sakes, give the dude a chance. Jay Leno and David Letterman are great at what they do, but Conan should have been given more of a chance to do what he does best.
His humour appeals to a different crowd, and I think he really could have had a successful run as The Tonight Show host. Now we’ll never know. Thanks a bunch, NBC. Way to take a great talent and screw him over.
