Felipe Esparza has one of the best-crafted stage personas in the whole competition. His voice, his mannerisms, his stance are all unique and memorable, which gives him a huge opportunity in the competition before he even opens his mouth. Luckily, when he does open his mouth, he has some quality material come out from time to time.
His material went through a lot of topics including reflecting on his life, his time in a police car, his bachelor’s in communications and the war in Iraq. He actually tied all these together pretty well in his set so that the transitions weren’t too awkward.
Felipe’s stage presence is definitely magnetic and memorable. His charcoal full-length suit with blue-striped tie and light-blue button-up is a nice contrast to his curly, undone hair and general homeless look. He’s definitely thought about it, and the combination works really well. He had a few timing glitches but overall did a really great job.

Felipe Esparza’s character shone through again today, though he broke character a couple of times. He might be overusing his bug-eyes to get laughs, though. It would be better if he had some actual material to deliver, but again, maybe he’s saving his best material for the later rounds.
I’m not so sure about the thin tie wrapped around a polo shirt, but at least he’s trying. It seems like purple is really popular with NBC’s stylists this year.

A somewhat boring intro video, but that hardly matters as Felipe Esparza’s true strength lies in his on-stage persona.
The “I want cereal” joke went on for far too long with no payoff at all. The bug eyes are also getting a little predictable to oversell the jokes, but again, Felipe’s strength lies not in his joke writing, as this week he didn’t really have many jokes. He can sell what he does have, though, and a lot of times that matters more.
I must say, though, that Felipe’s outfit this week is terrible. The small tie and untucked shirt create the optical illusion of him being out of shape. I’m not saying he has to be stylish every week but definitely the small tie has got to go.
