How To Stand-Up Comedy: Margaret Cho in I’m The One That I Want, Review and Analysis

I’ll be examining the ins and outs of stand-up comedy in my new series of articles titled How To Stand-Up Comedy (and yes, I’m aware the title is grammatically incorrect).
For this opening article, I decided to dissect Margaret Cho’s first feature, I’m The One That I Want, to try and gauge what it is that makes Margaret Cho so damn successful and applying those elements to my own comedy.
I first saw I’m The One That I Want during its initial run through independent theatres across North America. I was instantly drawn to Margaret Cho’s brand of humour, as I was a huge fan of her network television show, All-American Girl. If you haven’t already seen “I’m The One That I Want,” then you need to go down to your local video store and rent it immediately. If it’s not at the major video stores then try the video store in the gay village, I guarantee they’ll have a copy.
Supercute.ca finally back on first page of Google results for “Canadian comedian”

Back when I relaunched this website a couple of months back, my web presence was in shambles. I used to be on the first page of Google results for “Canadian comedian” with my first website a couple of years ago. I then went through a phase of transitioning between several different websites. This knocked me off Google search results almost entirely.
A couple of months ago, I made the goal to get back on top and back on page one. This promise to myself was a part of a larger overall strategy to get back to my success in the comedy field that was great early on but has lately stagnated.
Well, today is a HUGE day for me, as I am finally back on page one of Google’s search results for both “Canadian comedian” and “Canadian stand-up.” Go to Google and try searching those keywords, and you’ll see me. Now, Google rankings are fluid, so I’ll have to work hard to keep my current position form now on.
I’m so happy that one of my main goals has come to fruition. I hope this is the beginning of my other comedy goals coming to life as well in 2009.
I hope I never suffer through writer’s block, please please please

I’ve been fortunate enough to never suffer through writer’s block. I can probably attribute this to the fact that I generally only write when I feel inspired. It’s not that I sit down for long sessions while I’m inspired, but I instead write down little notes when an idea comes to my head, and when I do have time to write, I go back to my notes and get down to work.
I now have a huge backlog of great ideas that I have to organize before I can go ahead write new comedy sets. In total, the job of organizing should take me about 40 hours. For some reason, I can’t get passed this block. It’s not so much writer’s block as it is writer’s procrastination.
I took this past Friday and Monday off partially to work my way through the backlog, but I can unfortunately report that I haven’t actually done any work organizing. I know to be great at comedy, I have to put in the time doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. It’s just that when I look at the mountain of organizing, I get a bit weary.
Oh well, I won’t beat myself up, as the days off are gone now. I’ll simply have to split up my workload and do a little each night before going to bed.
