What a terrible way to end a season full of spectacular performances. Adam Lambert does his best with a below-average song. He falls off key a couple of times, or maybe not . . . who knows, maybe that’s how the song was written. I don’t know who Kara DioGuardi was writing this song for since it doesn’t fit Adam’s vocal quality or Kris’ vocal range.

Adam’s performance was of course great as usual, though a little understated, which was surprising. I love the jacket and the pants. It’s a great image to blaze into our minds until his album comes out.

Damn, Adam Lambert does it again. From the a cappella opening to the simple instrumentation throughout, allowing Adam’s sweet vocals to shine through beautifully. I actually like Adam in this style of music much more than when he does hard rock, but I’m sure hard rock will sell him a bit better in today’s market. The emotion that Adam conveys in this performance is absolutely amazing.

I always love seeing Adam stripped down and in a nice suit. Adam didn’t move around much, which was quite appropriate for the song.

Michael Sarver – Performance Profile, American Idol 2009 Season 8

March 25, 2009 by vongsundara · Leave a Comment

Michael Sarver has a good voice but not quite good enough. Michael doesn’t have the goods to be a true R&B singer, though I suppose he maybe could have a career in country music, seeing as how a great voice isn’t exactly a requirement in that genre (sorry country fans, but it’s true).

Michael Sarver performs Ain’t Too Proud to Beg (The Temptations), American Idol 2009 Season 8, Week 3 (March 25) Top 10: Motown (Smokey Robinson, mentor)

Michael Sarver has a nice tone to his voice, but he struggled badly with his upper range in this performance. The performance came off as a little too weak for the subject matter, similar to his performance of I Don’t Want To Be. The ending of the song was also way too over the top.

Michael Sarver used the stage well, and his performances have become less and less horrible from week to week.

Alexis Grace – Performance Profile, American Idol 2009 Season 8

March 18, 2009 by vongsundara · Leave a Comment

Alexis Grace had one of the best transformations I’ve ever seen from her first audition to her performance in the Top 36. Her new hair, makeup and attitude were refreshing and showed that she could be a real star.

Alexis Grace’s voice was definitely nice, but I was never as blown away as the judges. That being said, I wasn’t as disappointed by the judges and thought that Alexis’ last two performances were actually pretty good. She was a consistent performer but never had a breakout performance.

Alexis Grace performs Jolene (Dolly Parton), American Idol 2009 Season 8, Week 2 (March 17) Top 11: Grand Ole Opry (Randy Travis, mentor)

Alexis Grace sounded like she had a lack of breath control to open the song, but I really thought that Alexis brought a nice delicacy to her vocals. She told the story very well.

Alexis Grace has done a great job of changing up her hair and look in subtle ways week after week. Her little black dress looked great paired with her dangling earrings.

Jasmine Murray – Performance Profile, American Idol 2009 Season 8

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Jasmine Murray. I don’t understand why the judges were pushing her so heavily and calling her commercial. Jasmine’s voice wasn’t quite distinct enough to be commercial and neither was her look. I definitely was not sad that she was eliminated in the first week.

I like that Jasmine Murray is taking a lot of risks vocally. Last week Jasmine sang Christina Aguilera and this week she picked a song most recently made famous by Mariah Carey. Jasmine performs the song well, though there’s nothing particularly outstanding about Jasmine’s voice to make the performance stand out. Jasmine ended up being a little shoutie at the end. The song also sounded a bit too repetitive.

Jasmine Murray’s outfit is definitely strange. It’s like a pink throwback to the hippie days.

Jorge Nunez – Performance Profile, American Idol 2009 Season 8

March 11, 2009 by vongsundara · Leave a Comment

I think Jorge Nunez went away a little too soon, but in the long run it doesn’t matter too much since Jorge never had the potential to win. Jorge’s voice was good enough, though a little boring at times. He has a lot of work to do with his stage presence, but that will come with time. If Jorge keeps working hard, I think he can make his mark in the music industry. I’m just not sure how big that mark will be.

Jorge Nunez has incredibly pure vocals, and he has no trouble hitting any of the vocals in this song. It’s all a little boring, but being safe with the vocal arrangement seems to be a theme tonight.

Jorge Nunez’ outfit was also really bland. A purply undershirt with a grey blazer does not scream star to me.

Tatiana del Toro – Performance Profile, American Idol 2009 Season 8

March 4, 2009 by vongsundara · Leave a Comment

Oh Tatiana del Toro, I will never, ever forget you.

Tatiana del Toro got the chance to prove that she has a real voice, perhaps one of the top voices in the entire competition. Unfortunately for her, she was unable to gain enough fans to continue in the competition due to her somewhat crazy behaviour. For me, I absolutely love the drama that she brought, but she definitely rubbed other people the wrong way.

Tatiana del Toro’s first performance of Saving All My Love For You is still one of the top performances of the entire season, and I hope that’s what people remember her for. I think that Tatiana fell victim to the format changes this year, as she would have stuck around much longer if the show went with last season’s format of allowing viewers to vote for the Top 24. Oh well, that’s life I suppose.

Tatiana del Toro performs Saving All My Love for You (Whitney Houston), American Idol 2009 Season 8, (March 5) Wild Card Round: Billboard Top 100 Hits

Tatiana del Toro chose to perform the same song again for some strange reason. She struggled through the entire first verse, but the second half of the song is absolutely brilliant and better than almost everyone else tonight. It’s really too bad that she didn’t choose a different song.

Tatiana del Toro chose a very Las Vegas-style look tonight. Her dress was very shiny, and I don’t think I enjoy this look as much as what she was wearing last time.

Tatiana’s performance was a little more aggressive than last time. I like how she matched her performance with her look. Even the arrangement of the vocals tonight was more aggressive. It’s nice to see that Tatiana is able to perform the same song multiple ways.
