Jasmine Murray – Performance Profile, American Idol 2009 Season 8

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Jasmine Murray. I don’t understand why the judges were pushing her so heavily and calling her commercial. Jasmine’s voice wasn’t quite distinct enough to be commercial and neither was her look. I definitely was not sad that she was eliminated in the first week.

I like that Jasmine Murray is taking a lot of risks vocally. Last week Jasmine sang Christina Aguilera and this week she picked a song most recently made famous by Mariah Carey. Jasmine performs the song well, though there’s nothing particularly outstanding about Jasmine’s voice to make the performance stand out. Jasmine ended up being a little shoutie at the end. The song also sounded a bit too repetitive.
Jasmine Murray’s outfit is definitely strange. It’s like a pink throwback to the hippie days.

Jasmine Murray chose a huge song, trying to sing Christina Aguilera’s “Reflection” from Mulan. Jasmine did a lot better than she did last week when she was a complete disaster. Her voice still is not nearly good enough to be a real star. She also avoided many of the higher notes and only went into falsetto at the very end and not throughout like the original.
Jasmine Murray looked very pretty tonight but still a little boring. Her hair and makeup are suitably complementary to the performance, which itself was a little dull.

Jasmine Murray completely lost her breath control and didn’t project enough on this song. Very few notes sounded solid. It’s too bad because she has quite a capable voice. I don’t really know what went wrong; the song was in her range and was a good choice. Maybe her voice was worn out from weeks of competition. Who knows? All I know is that this vocal performance just did not cut it at all.
Jasmine has a commercial look for sure, but I don’t think her face is quite enough to carry her into mainstream stardom. Her stage presence was good, though, and her movements around the stage were convincing as a professional. It’s too bad that the vocals brought down the entire performance.
